Who are we?

We are Jannie Stricker and Silvia King, and together we run the Pop-up Laughter Club. We both are certified Laughter Yoga Teachers, EMCC-accredited Senior Practitioner Coaches with an MSc in Applied Positive Psychology & Coaching Psychology (MAPPCP). What connects us apart from the many overlaps in our work is a sense of humour and the passion of bringing the character strength of humour to as many people as possible.

How the Pop-up Laughter Club is different

Unlike most laughter clubs and laughter yoga providers out there, our laughter exercises are more than just clowning around or laughing for no reason. Our exercises have a reason: to improve your wellbeing and help you develop a mindset that can support you when you hit life’s challenges.

So what is laughter yoga and what should you expect?

Laughter yoga combines unconditional laughter with breathing exercises from yoga and a good helping of playfulness. You don’t need to be a comedian or be funny. Maybe the one requirement is that you won’t take yourself too seriously as we are play-acting our way through the exercises.

That means

  • No jokes
  • No yoga mats
  • But play acting and
  • Deep breathing like you may know it from yoga.

Changing habits and mindsets requires practice. That’s why we recommend that you do these exercises daily. Ideally, we would recommend that you keep going for 3 weeks because research has shown that this is when we start to establish habits. However, we realise that sometimes life gets in the way, so just do it as often as you can and laugh about it if you miss a day.

Can anyone do laughter yoga?

Laughter Yoga is a physical exercise that makes your heart work harder, your lungs shift a lot more air and requires your upper body to support this movement. That’s why it is important that you don’t do these exercises if you have, for example, a cough or cold, if you have a heart condition, are pregnant or have a bad back.

Please read our disclaimer carefully, it explains all the counter indications when you should not do laughter exercises or get qualified medical guidance first. You can find it here: https://wellorganisation.com/staying-safe-with-laughter-yoga-our-disclaimer/

Coaching with Humour, seriously!?

with Silvia King & Jannie Stricker

Yes!! Jannie Stricker, MSc and Silvia King think that we can. However, we should laugh responsibly.

In this workshop run for the Institute of Positive Psychology Coaching (IPPC), we explore the different roles of smiles, laughter, humour and playfulness and how we can align them with coaching core competencies in our coaching practice.

Not sure if it's for you? You can find a summary of the event here.

If you want to see the full workshop and get ideas how to use humour responsibly in your coaching practice, then the on-demand workshop recording is available from the IPPC website here.

“A different kind of happy – positive psychology and coaching psychology in the Middle East”

with Silvia King & Dr Louise Lambert

Webinar hosted by SIETAR Europa in April 2021

In this free webinar, Dr Louise Lambert and I share experiences and insights around positive psychology and positive psychology coaching in the Middle East. Based on scientific research, we explore how something as seemingly universal as "happiness" can mean something quite different in non-Western contexts.

We also look at the implications this may have for positive psychology coaches and coaches in general aiming to work in the Middle East or with clients from a Middle Eastern culture.

You can find the free recording of this webinar here!
