In its simplest terms, Supervision is a form of experiential learning by the supervisee to “review and reflect on their work in order to do it better” (Carroll, 2019, p. 564). Any professional engaged in the personal and professional growth of others can benefit from Supervision, including Coaches, Mentors, Trainers and Consultants at all levels of experience and training and with all accreditations.
Why Supervision?
The purpose of Supervision is threefold (EMCC Global, 2022):
- To ensure the Supervisee maintains appropriate professional standards
- To facilitate the development of the Supervisee’s professional practice
- To provide support for the Supervisee’s well-being
Supervision is also increasingly a requirement, for example for EMCC-accredited coaches and organisations' in/external coaches and mentors.
What happens in Supervision?
Supervision offers “a safe space for reflective dialogue with an accredited Supervisor, supporting the Supervisee’s practice, development and wellbeing” (EMCC Global, 2022). The Supervision process goes beyond discussing client cases. It offers the space to explore a broad range of professional practice like ethical dilemmas, the development of the Supervisee’s professional competencies, maintaining their own wellbeing as practitioners or growing their coaching business.
Supervision can take various forms, depending on a Supervisee’s needs. I offer the following arrangements in-person or online:
- Individual 1-to-1 sessions of 1 hour.
- Group Supervision of 1,5 hour for groups of minimum 3 and maximum 6 participants that leverages the shared experience of the group towards Supervisees’ needs as individuals within the group.
- Observed practice sessions where Supervisees are observed in their actual practice followed by a Supervision and feedback session of 1,5-2 hours. These sessions can be individual, “real-life” client sessions or in a Supervision (group) setting where Supervisees engage in peer practice.
Who is Supervision for?
Any professional engaged in the personal and professional growth of others can benefit from Supervision. This includes Coaches, Mentors, Leaders, Trainers and Consultants. The task of Supervision is to work together to develop the efficacy of your client work and ethical practice in a reflective space on the topic(s) relevant to you. If you or your organisation are holding a professional accreditation, you may be encouraged or required to engage in regular Supervision by your accrediting body, professional insurance provider or by law.
Supervision supports professionals at all levels of experience and training and with all accreditations.
What is Supervision not?
Supervision is different from coaching and mentoring as well as therapy or counselling. Our focus is on your practice as coach, mentor etc. If it emerges in our sessions that other services may be better suited, I will discuss this with you.
Importantly, I am not a qualified medical practitioner or therapist, and clients are advised to seek help or further guidance from a qualified medical professional if required. If such a situation arises, I will discuss this with you.
